Motor oil is viscous, which means it is capable of protecting the engine by lubricating it. Unfortunately, as motor oil ages, it loses its viscosity. When this happens, it is not able to protect the engine effectively. Consequently, if you have old and dirty motor oil circulating through your engine, you may end up damaging the engine. In fact, an engine without motor oil at all can be damaged beyond repair in less than 30 minutes. Your engine needs the protection of clean motor oil at all times.

As we mentioned, the oil lubricates the engine’s moving parts to make sure they move in tandem without any friction. You probably learned in science class that friction produces heat. One of the things that you need to make sure never happens is that your engine overheats because the moving parts are producing too much friction. As we mentioned above, this can damage the engine quickly.
Reduces Heat
So now you know that motor oil also helps to reduce the heat production in the engine. It isn’t just the cooling system and the engine coolant. Rather, as the motor oil circulates through the engine and lubricates the moving parts, it draws heat away from them. If the motor oil is old and dirty, it may have lost its viscosity. Consequently, instead of drawing heat away from the parts, it will actually make the engine run hotter.
Cleans
Another thing that will make the engine run hotter is dirt and sludge. This is one thing that motor oil removes as it circulates through the engine. You may not have realized this but the motor oil helps to keep the engine clean. Naturally, if the oil is dirty, the engine will be dirty. This is why the oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles.
